Matter Stations

Today we rotated through a couple stations looking at some of the concepts we have covered in science. We compared different mixtures and how to separate them as well as looked density of objects.

Our power went out for a bit this afternoon. We just kept on working!

Today in science we measured items to determine the volume. We used the formula length x width x height.
This is part of our matter stations for our matter assessments this week.

Hip hip hooray it’s the 100th day!

Today is the 100th day of fourth grade!  It’s moving fast!  Today we did a challenge: students had 100 seconds to collect 100 items and build a 100 piece structure. It was fun!

Sometimes you just need a brain break.

Adding Fractions

On Thursday we started to add fractions with like denominators. The class did a great job with adding but some students are still struggling reducing to simplest form. We will continue to practice this and today we will work on subtracting fractions.

Ability Awareness Day

Today we spent the morning participating in Ability Awareness Day. We started the day in an assembly to listen to Lindbergh graduate Brad Bauer discuss his spinal cord injury. We then rotated through classrooms listening to different speakers. The students were great listeners and asked good questions as well. It was a very informative morning.

Planning out our Writing

Today we made a plan for our informational books. Students thought about each chapter, how they will research for that chapter, and then how the chapter will be organized.

Analyzing Writing

Today we looked at a mentor text in writing.  A mentor text is an example of writing and this particular mentor demonstrated an informational report. Students worked with a partner to evaluate the different chapters. They looked at text structure, writing style, and thought about what they would need to do for a similar topic. Tomorrow we will create plans for their own writing.

Looking for Important Information

We are reading a lot of nonfiction these days, and today we looked at using some prompts to help push our thinking when taking notes. We had some brave students willing to share their notes with the group!

We have constructed a timeline of the events that led to the American Revolution. We left some space to add in later the actual war.

Working on a Timeline

Today we started to work on a timeline showing the causes of the American Revolution. Stay tuned tomorrow for the finished product. Don’t forget yearbook photos tomorrow for all groups.

Revolutionary Reading

We are reading about the Revolutionary War in reading. Today we used Myon for our books in reading group.  We are reading about the causes of the war and looking for clues to determine the text structure. Students can read on Myon at home as well. There are thousands of books- both fiction and nonfiction.

Reducing Fractions

Do you know what the GCF is?  It is finding the Greatest Common Factor in the numerator and denominator of a fraction.  Finding the Greatest Common Factor is the first step we are using to help us divide and reduce our fractions to simplest form.

Fractions in Action!

Today we started to learn about equivalent fractions. Equivalent means equal and we used both fraction tiles and multiplication/division to find equivalent fractions. Keep reviewing those math facts. They are important in this chapter!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  We had a great first day setting goals and getting back into the swing of things.

These are a couple weeks late, but here are some pics from our Winter Party and last day before break.
