An "Eggcellent" Egg Drop 2015!

We were so "eggcited" to celebrate the end of MAP testing we had an egg drop today. The students worked together in groups to make a contraption to keep their egg alive. They all did a great job with limited resources!

Today we played a class favorite,Grudgeball, to review for our social studies test on Friday. Students should study the study guide to help them get ready for the government test.

Adding Quotes to Writing

Today we focused on adding quotes from the text to our literary essays. The second half of our class started their symmetry projects as well.

Rotational Symmetry

Today we learned about rotational symmetry. During our stations we started to work on projects demonstrating rotational symmetry. We also had another birthday!  We loved the yummy cookie cakes Rylee brought in!

Reading and Writing

Today we had a reading/writing crossover. We have been using the Ways to Push Our Thinking prompts in writing to get us to say more when discussing characters from literature. Today we used those same prompts to discuss our book club books.  This helped them say more about their characters.

Helicopter Speed Activity

We used the formula for speed today to determine how fast paper helicopters would fall. We had three trials - adding weight and changing the wings each time.

Looking at Speed

We used the formula for speed today to determine how fast a marble can move on different inclines. We also started new literature circle groups and books.  Today all of the groups made their plan for reading.

ZAP the MAP!

Today we had a great day of learning!  Students were encouraged to dress like superheroes to show they can Zap the MAP! We also got to spend time with our first grade buddies and listen to their latest writing. They also brought some testing goodies to our class. We also had our final catapult challenge. One group was able to catapult a cotton ball 6 feet and another hit the target!

Catapult and Circus

To help with our studies of force and motion we made catapults in science today. Tomorrow we will have a little competition to see how far they can go. We also got to see the wonderful second grade circus!

Perimeter around the room!

Today we talked about finding the perimeter of objects. We used the word "rim" to helped us remember that perimeter is the distance around a closed figure.  The class then chose objects around the room to find the perimeter.

Measuring Angles

Today we learned to use a protractor and measure angles. The class did a great job and we will practice more next week. We also had a viewing party and watched the iMovies the class worked on. They turned out great and they are coming soon to the blog.

Weekly Math Stations

We have had some fun this week with our weekly math stations. We have a measurement station and we are measuring all over the room including how far we can jump and throw a paper airplane. We also have some partner decimal games, a fact fluency activity, and ALEKS.
